Storylines to Follow
The Returning Champs
Winning this tournament is no easy feat. Only five wrestlers have ever won it four times: James and Sidney Tildsley (Shawsheen Tech), Thomas Brown (Chelmsford), Connor McLaughlin, and Matt Smith (Timberlane). Here are the wrestlers looking for a second, title
Seeking a 2nd Title:
John Woodall | Franklin, MA ’28 | (Won 106 last season, now at 113)
Johnny Moraes | Melrose, MA ’26 | (Won 113 last season, now at 120)
Nick Desisto | Tewksbury, MA ’26 | (Won 113 in 2023, now at 126)
One wrestler in particular has the potential to make history...
Tildsley’s Dominance
James Tildsley (Shawsheen Tech, MA ’26) has been a force since he stepped on the mat as an eighth grader at Billerica High School. He won the tournament then, and every year since. Tildsley is 25–0 at the Lowell Holiday Tournament, with 21 pins across the last four years. He has only been scored on offensively once during that span, while recording 31 takedowns against his opponents at what many call the toughest tournament in New England. Lowell partly earns that title because James Tildsley is in it. He'll go for his fifth crown this weekend.
The Team Race
The team race is always one of the best parts of the event. Shawsheen Tech (MA) has won this tournament two of the last three years. Newtown (CT) became the first Connecticut team to win the event in 2023, while St. John’s Prep (MA) captured the title in 2021.
Shawsheen will be challenged this year by Central Catholic (MA), which has built a strong youth movement over the past few seasons and is ready to contend with the top teams. Can Newtown return to form, or can outsiders like Milford (MA) or Mt. Anthony Union (VT) make a push?
Predicted Team Top Eight:
(2) Central Catholic (MA)
(5) Shawsheen Tech (MA)
(12) St. John’s Prep (MA)
(7) Newtown (CT)
(8) Milford (MA)
(14) Tewksbury (MA)
(16) Andover (MA)
(9) Mt. Anthony Union (VT)
Maine and Rhode Island
For the first time since 2019, all six New England states will be represented at Lowell. Rhode Island last appeared in 2023 with Coventry and Hope, while Marshwood (ME) last competed in 2019 and returns this year ready to roll. Can Marshwood, Cranston West (RI), or La Salle Academy (RI) crack the top 10 team scores — or even the top five?
The Meaning
Winning this tournament — or even making the finals — is a major accomplishment. Some argue it is tougher than certain state tournaments, while others point to the sheer number of matches wrestled as proof it rivals the New England Championships. Over the past two seasons, 35 of the 56 Lowell finalists went on to reach the New England podium — a 62.5% success rate. It is no coincidence. If you make the finals here, you are well-positioned for a deep postseason run. This tournament proves who is truly battle-tested.
