Last weekend, the NHSCA Duals took place in Virginia Beach, VA. There were multiple clubs that featured squads made up of mostly or all New England wrestlers that trekked down for the tournament. Some include: Doughboy (MA), Mayo Quanchi (RI), the aforementioned MetroWest United (MA), and Smitty’s Barn (NH) who also had a great tournament run.

The NHSCA Duals are one of the most competitive and largest dual meet tournaments in the country, usually gathering over 100 clubs, most of which are composite teams filled with star wrestlers from various states. The event lasts three days and teams are split into pools of four, with the top two per pool advancing to “championship” pools, until there are 32 teams left, which are then put into a single-elimination style bracket.

MetroWest United, a wrestling club located in Natick, Massachusetts, has enough talent that they brought two teams down to Virginia. The club split its wrestlers up into two teams Red and Black and combined for a total record of 10-5.

MWU Red was placed in “HS Pool 22” and placed second out of the four teams entered. Their first dual was a 60-11 win over MF Purge (Georgia); they then posted a 61-6 win over BRTC (Virginia), before falling in their final pool play match, 65-3 to Team Diesel (Pennsylvania). This was good enough to earn MWU Red a spot in the second round of championship teams.

MWU Red’s first opponent in “Champ HS Pool U” was Indiana Outlaws Black, who unfortunately bested Red, 46-17. Next was a tough 62-3 loss to Triumph Gold (Kansas), the club that went on to win the pool. However, the New Englanders bounced back with a win in their final match, a close 33-28 victory over MMG (Michigan). Jamie Evarts (Brookline, MA), Shaun McLaughlin (Natick, MA), and Michael Boulanger (Milford, MA), led the way for the Red team; they all finished 4-2.

MWU Black brought quite the star studded lineup to Virginia Beach. They were placed in “HS Pool 24” to start off, and boy, did they look impressive. In their first three duals of the tournament, they outscored opponents 194-10, with wins over three Pennsylvania squads: PANE, Buffalo Valley Blue, and Escape The Rock.

This star-studded New England team then advanced to “Champ HS Pool X,” were they won their first two matches by a combined score of 124-9 against D2 Ducks (Pennsylvania) and Journeymen Wrestling Club (New York). It was then that they were tested by the very talented Team Shutt Wrestling Prep (Pennsylvania). MWU Black took their first loss of the tournament, 46-19. By taking this loss, they fell into a “win or go home” match against Attrition Wrestling Gold (Michigan). After five matches, Attrition was winning 10-7. But then, MWU Black went on to win seven straight matches, turning the score into a lopsided 37-10. MWU would go on to win by a 40-16 final and qualify for the championship round of 32.

The field of the final 32 teams was decided; MWU Black’s first opponent was SWA, a composite team filled with stars from all across the country. However, that did not discourage the New Englanders, as they came away victorious, 33-27. MWU Black had officially made it to the round of 16, further than any club from New England had ever gone at the event before. MWU Black’s next foe was another Team Shutt group, this time calling themselves “Dynasty.” And again, MetroWest struggled against Shutt, as they lost, 57-12. Andrew Reall (Ponaganset, RI) led the team, going 9-0. Alex Gavronsky (Belmont Hill, MA) and Spencer Fine (Bishop Hendricken, RI) went 8-1, also impressing on the national stage. MetroWest United Black finished in the round of 16, going 7-2 overall against some of the top talent in the country.
