It was one for the record books. This past Memorial Day weekend, Lowell, MA-based Doughboy Wrestling Club (DWC) made New England History. by becoming the first ever New England club to make the quarter-finals of the prestigious NHSCA National Duals in Virginia Beach, VA
One of the most massive dual tournaments in the country, the NHSCA National Duels features well over 100 entries composed of clubs and superteams. DWC came in as the 8 seed and started the event going 3-0, beating Blue Shell Wrestling 76-6 and Sprig Gardner Wrestling Club 70-0. The New England team capped off day one with a forfeit win over the Jersey Dragons.
Several other New England based teams were in the fray on day two after winning at least two matches: Doughboy’s second team “Doughboy Gold” also went 3-0 along with both MetroWest United teams (MA) (Black and Red) and Mayo Quanchi Gold (RI) went 2-1. Two travel teams under Team Aliens Wrestling based in New England also advanced to day 2: Alien UFO went 3-0 and Alien Spaceship went 2-1.

DWC Black started off day two strong with a 50-6 over Team Gotcha. They then went on to defeat Triumph Black 73-0 and Vougar’s Wrestling Club from Long Island 71-6. The Bay State team went into day three outscoring opponents 340-18. Alien UFO and MetroWest United Black also made it to day three.
Doughboy had a bye in the round of 64 and then faced off against Team Diesel in the round of 32. But much like the last few matches, this one was a very lopsided 66-3 Doughboy win. By reaching this point, the round of 16, Doughboy tied Metrowest’s record from a few years prior. Having already beaten Triumph Black, DWC then found themselves facing off against Triumph Elite. It was here where DWC was finally challenged but still pulled away and won 43-17-officially going where no New England team has gone before.
As an 8 seed in the quarterfinals, the Massachusetts squad found themselves up against 1 seed Schutt Van Hoven. The National super team proved to be too much for the homegrown club as DWC fell 51-10 to the star-studded Schutt team.

The New Englanders, however, still had a chance to add to this amazing run as they were now one win away from placing in the top six. They came up against Prestige Worldwide and got off to a hot start winning the first four matches going up 17-0. But Prestige stormed back, and Doughboy found themselves behind and ultimately just fell short 34-33 which means the squad would have to settle for a top eight finish.
“They did a great job competing,” said Doughboy Coach Mike Marshall to the Schwartz Report. “They worked hard for each other. They really wanted to prove at this tournament that they can compete on the national stage with all these other teams, they worked hard, and earned it.”
Highlighting some individual performances from the team, several wrestlers went undefeated in the event. 113lbs: Julian Rios (9-0), 152lbs: James Tildsley (8-0), and 285lbs Thomas Brown (9-0).
A few key wins for some wrestlers included James Tildsley’s win against Indiana State Champion and University of Indianapolis Commit Michael Ortega. Peter Rincan had wins over both Pennsylvania and New Jersey state placers. Julian Rios beat Teequavious Mills 12-0. Mills is ranked No. 6 in the country. Matt Harrold had wins over Maryland State Champion Evan Gavin and over Illinois Champion Jaxson Matheni. Thomas Brown had a 4-1 win over Micah Hach from South Dakota. Hach is one of only two wrestlers to have beaten Brown in the last few years.
